The Festival
The Walpurgis Queer Horror Film Festival was born out of a very real need: to champion and celebrate films whose storylines or main characters represent the LGBTQIA+ community, women, and all kinds of dissident voices. We want to create a unique space in Barcelona where queer horror cinema with feminine or dissident perspectives can actually bloom, standing in opposition to traditional straight-patriarcal filmmaking and shedding light on the problems and discrimination these communities face every day.

Our goal is to create an inclusive and diverse context within the festival landscape, which is full of cinema competitions and showcases where perspectives and sensibilities like ours have long been missing. By screening and discussing films that tackle discrimination, identity, and diversity we strive to inspire meaningful conversations and foster a greater understanding and empathy.
We want Walpurgis to be a space for dialogue and reflection where everyone leaves each screening not only entertained, but also more aware and committed to the figh for equality and inclusion. We aim to promote filmmaking culture as well as gender and sexual diversity education.
By listening and assessing all kinds of voices, we can overcome all obstacles, myths, clichés and stereotypes, increasing visibility and promoting the understanding of different realities. We want to create links and synergies with other horror film festivals across Catalonia and the rest of the world, to share information and projects, generate spaces of respect and collaboration, and eliminate harmful practices.
We also want to contribute with Barcelona’s cultural schedule, adding new visions and inclusive and transgressive proposals.
The Walpurgis BCN Queer Horror Film Festival wants to be a festival for everyone, so we extend an open invitation to the comunity to join us. We want this to be a space where everyone feels welcome, where we celebrate differences and share experiences. Together we can create a festival that not only reflects our society’s plurality, but also celebrates and encourages it: a space where horror cinema meets diversity and inclusion.
We are committed to presenting a selection of films and works of art of the utmost quality within both the classics and new features, highlighting both emerging and renowned talented creators.
